News:

  • Health, Food Safety wings to collect samples, convince food outlets on need for curbs in trans fatty acids.

Major highlights:

  • The Health Department and the Food Safety wing are joining hands to launch an initiative to enforce dietary guidelines.
  • These guidelines involve reduction of trans fatty acids (TFAs), salt and sugar in commercially available foods in the State.
  • The initiative, with technical support from the World Bank, WHO and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
  • It is being launched as unhealthy diet is pushing up metabolic syndrome and premature deaths due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among Keralites.
  • Metabolic syndrome:
    • Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels.
    • It helps to increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
  • WHO recommends that trans-fat intake be limited to less than 1% of total energy intake and has called for the total elimination of TFAs in global food supply by 2023.
  • FSSAI has proposed to limit TFA limit in foods to 2% and eliminate trans fats from foods by 2022.

Trans Fatty Acids

  • Trans fat, also called unsaturated fatty acids or trans fatty acids, are a type of unsaturated fat that occur in small amounts in nature.
  • It became widely produced industrially from vegetable fats starting in 1950’s or use in margarine, snack food, packaged baked foods, and for frying fast food.
  • Trans fat has been shown to be associated consistently, in an intake-dependent way, with increased risk of coronary artery disease, a leading cause of death in Western nations.

  • Ministry of Civil aviation and commerce industry has launched the upgraded version of Air Seva 2.0.

Air Seva 2.0 portal

  • The upgraded version of AirSewa to provide a superior user experience with enhanced functionalities has been launched.
  • Major improvements include features such as secure sign-up and log-in with social media, chatbot for travellers support, improved grievance management including social media grievances, real-time flight status and details flight schedule.
  • The upgrade and improved version of AirSewa operates through an interactive web portal as well as through a mobile app for both android and iOS platforms.
  • It will offer passengers a convenient and hassle free travel experience.
  • The web portal and application will help to capture air travellers’ feedback for policy interventions.
  • Further upgrades of AirSewa are also being planned which would include DigiYatra registration, airport maps, BHIM payment integration and grievance escalation and transfer

GROWTH- INDIA TELESCOPE

News

  • GROWTH- India telescope has made its first science observation.

Major highlights

  • The 7 m GROWTH-India telescope at the Indian Astronomical Observatory located in Hanle, Ladakh, has made its first science observation which is a follow-up study of a nova explosion.
  • Novae are explosive events involving violent eruptions on the surface of white dwarf stars, leading to temporary increase in brightness of the star.
  • Unlike a supernova, the star does not go on to die but returns to its earlier state after the explosion.

GROWTH telescope

  • The GROWTH-India telescope was commissioned six months ago soon after which it saw first light.
  • The telescope has been taking readings since then, and this is the first ‘follow-up’ work.
  • The telescope located at the Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO) at Hanle in Ladakh is the country’s first robotic telescope.
  • It is the first telescope to be designed to observe dynamic or transient events in the universe.
  • Called GROWTH-India, the facility at Hanle is part of a multi-country collaborative initiative known as Global Relay of Observatories Watching Transients Happen (GROWTH) to observe transient events in the universe.
  • The fully robotic optical research telescope is designed to capture cosmic events occurring in timescales much shorter than light years – years, days and even hours.

GANGA WATERWAY PROJECT

 About

  • The National Waterway 1 or NW-1 or Ganga-Bhagirathy- Hooghly river systems is located in India and runs from Haldia(Sagar) to Praygraj across Ganges, Bhagirathy and Hooghly river systems.
  • It is 1,620 Km long making it longest waterway in India.
  • It is of prime importance amongst of all the national waterways considering its local advantages.
  • The NW-1 passes through West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and serves major cities and their industrial hinterlands.
  • The 5,369 crore project is partly funded by the World Bank.
