 KARTARPUR CORRIDOR

News

  • What does Kartarpur signify for India-Pakistan ties?

Kartarpur Corridor

  • Kartarpur Corridor is a proposed border-corridor between India and Pakistan connecting the holy shrine of Dera Baba Nanak Sahib to the holy shrine of Kartarpur Sahib (also referred to as Kartarpur Gurdwara) states of Punjab in India and Pakistan.
  • The main goal of this proposed corridor is to facilitate the crossing of religious devotees to visit the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, located in Narowal District, Pakistan, 120 km from Lahore but only three kilometres from the Indian side of the border.
  • The corridor,. once built, will give Indian pilgrims an easy access to the shrine in Kartarpur
  • The gurdwara in Kartarpur is located on the bank of river Ravi in Pakistan.
  • A bridge will need to be constructed over the Ravi and there shall be no need for passports or visas.
  • India had first proposed the Kartarpur Sahib corridor in 1999 when the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee took a bus ride to Lahore.
  • Significance:
    • The project is unique for several reasons:
      • Development of human corridors:
        • Human corridors of this sort are normally used for emergency situations: refugees fleeing violence or humanitarian disasters.
      • Opening up of new avenues for India Pakistan dialogues:
        • The corridor will come up at a time when few avenues for India-Pakistan relations exist.
        • In the past few years, not only has all official dialogue ceased but other exchanges by actors, artists, authors, academics, media and musicians have all but ended.
      • Opportunities for visa free pilgrimage:
        • Religious pilgrimages by Sikhs and Hindus to shrines in Pakistan and by Muslims to Sufi shrines in India see a reduced number of visas, and the corridor will be an exception where large numbers will be able to travel visa-free.

GRAVITY telescope

  • GRAVITY is a second generation instrument on the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) located at the Atacama desert in Chile and represents a huge step forward for both interferometry and for the Very Large Telescope (VLT).
  • GRAVITY is almost an all-in-one device: is a four-beam combiner, near-infrared, adaptive-optics-assisted, fringe-tracking, astrometric and imaging instrument.
  • The second important feature of GRAVITY is its astrometric capacity, which is its ability to measure distances in the sky to very high accuracy.
  • Measuring distances so precisely means it is possible to detect the movements of objects that are very far away in just one ni
  • GRAVITY is able to observe the immediate surroundings of SgrA*, the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy.
